Falling in Love with the Earth:
From Creation-Care to Compassion for Creation
with Stephen Scharper
As people of faith awaken to our current environmental challenges, they are scouring their traditions to uncover and rediscover images and ideas that can help guide them on their journey.
For Christians, notion of stewardship, creation care, simplicity, and humility are being re-examined and reinterpreted in light of our present ecological moment.
In this Thanksgiving weekend, as thousands of salmon return to Sorrento, we will explore these themes and motifs, and reflect on how people of good will are being called beyond creation care to compassion for creation; indeed, they are being invited to fall in love with the Earth.
STEPHEN SCHARPER is a professor of religion and environment at the University of Toronto. He is also a Toronto Star columnist, author of For Earth’s Sake: Toward a Compassionate Ecology and co-author of The Green Bible with his wife, a novelist and anthropologist.
He is striving in his own life to combine a concern for the Earth with a concern for social justice along with a love and awe of creation.
