Andover Newton Theological School

About Andover Newton

Established in 1807, Andover Newton Theological School is the oldest graduate theological institution in the United States, the seed for which traces back to 1778 when Phillips Academy was founded for “the promotion of true piety and virtue” in Andover, MA. In the early 19th Century, New England Congregationalists at Phillips Academy instituted a separate department of divinity and raised money for the Samuel Abbot Professor of Theology, the first seminary professorship in North America and a position now held by Andover Newton’s S. Mark Heim.

In a separate founding, the Newton Theological Institution was opened in 1825 “up on the hill,” and began instructing clergy for ministry at home and abroad. Both the Andover and Newton campuses were widely known for their established missions education as alumni went into the field; one of these was Adoniram Judson, the creator of the first Burmese English dictionary who also translated the entire Bible into Burmese.

In 1931, the Andover campus, after a brief stint at Harvard, made a move to the “hill” in Newton, by invitation. Soon after, the Master of Sacred Theology program was developed, a program that continues to be offered at Andover Newton (See: Master of Sacred Theology).

As a result of this rich history and our forward thinking philosophy in regards to graduate education, President Nick Carter states that, “Andover Newton is the oldest theological school in the U.S., and will become the newest” (See: Message from the President).

To that end the Andover Newton faculty constantly reinvigorate our seven master’s degree programs (MA and M.Div.), our doctor of ministry program (D. Min.) and our certificate programs in Theological Studies and Congregational Health Ministries with energetic, enlightened and exacting courses of instruction.

Further, Andover Newton’s Field Education Program was recently recognized nationally by the Yale Center for Faith and Culture for its cutting edge developments in providing experiential opportunities for growth and education, though it is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country (See: Field Education). – a program used as a national model for ministerial field experience.

Andover Newton’s rich history as a groundbreaking school in theological education successfully enhances its forward momentum. Faculty, students and staff prove that the oldest can strive to be the newest, that there is always a spring in the seasons of growth.
